Secrets to Successful Industrial Electrostatic Precipitator Cleaning
Electrostatic Precipitators are vital for industrial facilities. But cleaning and maintenance is far from easy. Read below to discover how Kingfisher delivers exceptional quality cleans for every ESP unit.

Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) units are integral parts of many industrial facilities. They are used for air pollution control, primarily by filtering harmful substances from emissions produced by industrial factories and power generating facilities. Electrostatic Precipitator cleaning is vital for their efficiency and maintenance, however this is not an easy task; that’s why it comes under specialist industrial cleaning.
Kingfisher have an 18 year history of cleaning industrial Electrostatic Precipitator units, with a 100% success rate and a complete accident free history.

What are Electrostatic Precipitators?
ESP units filter extremely fine particles from gases (‘dry electrostatic precipitators’) and liquids (‘wet electrostatic precipitators’).
If released into the atmosphere, waste particles can cause harm to the planet, contribute to climate change and cause disease such as lung damage and bronchitis.
Electrostatic Precipitator units work by electrostatically charging the particles which need to be removed from gas emissions. These particles are attracted to and are deposited upon metal plates which hold the opposite electrostatic charge.

Once enough filtered dust has accumulated, mechanical rapper boxes vibrate the plates, which allows the dust to fall to the bottom of the unit, called a hopper.
Particulate matter is removed from the hopper via a rotating screw, whereby it is then bagged up and removed for disposal or recycling.
Mechanical rapper boxes also become covered in the filtered substance. It is important to clean these periodically to ensure the longevity of the system. Slide the arrow to see some before and after shots!
Why is Electrostatic Precipitator cleaning important?
If your industrial facility has an operating ESP unit for emission control, the last thing you want or need is for it to malfunction or run at a low efficiency.
Too much material build up on the plates can cause dangerous oxides, ozone (O3) and other air pollutants if it is left to stagnate. Not to mention, these plates are extremely difficult to clean if the dust is exposed to moisture and left to harden over time.
Routine cleaning of ESP units is vital to ensure the longevity and effectiveness of the system. At Kingfisher, we service our clients’ ESP cleans once a year, however more frequent cleaning may be needed depending on the size of the unit.
How do Kingfisher clean ESPs?
Kingfisher have been cleaning industrial EP units for over 15 years now. We have perfected our Project Strategy so that our ESP cleans pass inspection successfully every year, without fail.
Our business ethos is that if a job cannot be done safely and thoroughly, we will not do it at all. We also believe that manual cleaning is by far the best method of cleaning ESPs.
Manual cleaning is the only method that guarantees that all built up particulate matter is removed.

Our experienced staff are expertly trained, and all work is thoroughly Risk Assessed by our Operations Manager, Jamie. The team are connected via safety harnesses at all times, with their safety being ensured by a Health and Safety spotter who remains on the deck throughout the project.

Dust collected on the plates is brushed off using long and short handled brushes, which then drops into the hopper, ready to be removed and bagged. Hard to reach areas are manually removed with an industrial-power vacuum.
Our industrial vacuum method is the only way to guarantee that built up matter is removed from troughs, nooks and hard to reach areas, as there is no way for the dust to fall into the hopper.

Once the work has completed, the ESPs are inspected by the unit manufacturer, Interprojekt. We are proud to say that our cleans have passed inspection every time.
