Case Study: Specialised Cleaning of Biomass Electrostatic Precipitator at the University of St Andrews
Kingfisher’s team of specialised cleaning operatives have been cleaning electrostatic precipitators for over 17 years. Read about our recent project for the University of St Andrews with their state-of-the-art biomass electrostatic precipitator unit.
Our team here at Kingfisher Industrial Services have over 40 years of experience with the most challenging and specialised cleaning projects in UK industry. This includes 17 years of experience with successful and accident-free cleans of electrostatic precipitator (ESP) units. A recent project involved a specialised biomass ESP clean for the University of St Andrews.
Supporting sustainability goals with biomass power
The University of St Andrews aims to be the first carbon neutral university and be net zero by 2035. In 2018, University opened their state-of-the-art biomass plant, Eden Campus, making it a hub for innovative energy research.
While biomass power presents a more renewable and sustainable form of energy than fossil fuels, the burning of organic matter still produces carbon emissions and air pollutants. The use of Electrostatic Precipitator Units (ESPs) for organic fuels such as wood and willow are integral for reducing particulate emission values to below the most stringent regulatory limits.

Dry ESP units operate by using opposing electrical charges to remove fly ash and dust particles as small as 0.1 microns from the waste gas. This removed particulate can then be recycled or disposed of in the appropriate way.

“Secrets to Successful Industrial Electrostatic Precipitator Cleaning”

Successful and specialised cleaning of biomass electrostatic precipitator units
Our many years of experience have taught us that the most effective cleaning method of biomass ESP units is manual cleaning with industrial strength vacuum equipment. This ensures that all areas of the electrostatic precipitator unit all receive a full and thorough clean.
All of our historic cleans of ESPs have been inspected upon completion by the manufacturer, Interprojekt, based in Germany. We are very proud that our cleaning projects have passed inspections every year without fail, allowing our clients to reduce their emissions and overall carbon footprint.
